The region of Durresi lies on the western central lowland of Albania. Its position compared to the rest of Albania and to the sea made it the crossroad of the important international roads since antiquity. It is worth mentioning the “Egnatia” road, which coming from the Italic Peninsula, crossed Durresi and went on in the east, where it joined the Road of Mendafshi (Silk Road) and made in this way, Durres one of the most important poles of the biggest international corridors of that time. Corridor VIII has considered Durres as the main and central pole, as well.
The region lies between 19° 25’ 00’’ and 19° 55’ 09’’ towards west-east and between 41° 16’ 30’’ and 41° 36’ 35’’ towards south-north. Nearly 30% of its border is touched by Adriatic Sea. The biggest part of the relieve of the Region is field and hilly reaching a maximum height of 1724 m. The mountains of Kruja make a gigantic terrace, from where in sunny days one can have a look in the south and north of Albania. Most of the hills are covered with typical Mediterranean bushes and forests, while the mountainous parts are covered with different kinds of forests according to the height.

In addition to two rivers that cross the Region and pour into the sea, within the borders of the Region, there are numerous springs with cold and curative water and a considerable number of water collectors with great values for the economy, landscape and a wonderful climate. The relieve variety, short distance to the sea, springs, bushes and forests grow a rich flora and fauna. This kind of variety of the sea, relieve, waters, and forests creates interesting landscapes of different kinds.
The climate in the low zones is soft and the average temperature of the sea during summer is 25° -26° C. The average number of the sunny hours during the year is over 2700. In the mountainous zones during winter the temperature falls under 0°C and there is a lot of snow. It is not a joke to hear that, at the region of Durresi, one can swim in the sea in the morning and in the afternoon can go skiing in Qafë-Shtamë of Kruja.
Its surface is 76.600 ha. From the administrative point of view it is divided into two districts: Durrësi and Kruja. These two districts are divided into 6 Municipalities and 10 Communes. There are nearly 400.000 inhabitants in the region located mainly in the main towns and the communes next to them.
It is worth mentioning that there are two important entry –departure knots for Albania in this region: the port of Durresi and the International Airport “Mother Tereza” in Rinas.
