Sukthi is one of the six municipalities of the District of Durresi and in addition to its centre, 6 other inhabited areas are part of it, covering a 15 km-long distance. The center of the Municipality is near Durrës-Tirana highway and only 15 km far from Durrësi.
The region has an ancient history. The archeological discoveries in Hamalle, the Ilirian tuma that is discovered near Sukthi, and other archeological discoveries prove that the region was inhabited since antiquity. Rushkulli, located in the northwestern part of the center of Sukthi, has served as reserved Durrësi. In cases of wars or emergencies, the people of Durrësi found refuge and could live in Rrushkull. That is why, in that place there is a catholic church, an orthodox one and the Muslim mosque. In the enormous forests of Rrushkull, very near the sea, there were growing immense flocks of cattle and horses. The history of Sukthi during last century is very interesting and it is related with the first steps of the development of capitalism in Albania before the war. According to the study of the historian Dhimitër Miho, the Italian Company EIAA rented from the Albanian state of that time for 99 years the lands of that region. In this way, a powerful agricultural undertaking was established. The association made great investments for the reclamation of lands, and applied the latest technologies. The changes after the war, the communist nationalizations made EIAA leave Albania, thus isolating it from the rest of the world, which went on for nearly 50 years. The changing marks that EIAA brought can still be found in the territory of Sukthi. There are toponyms, like: “the Channel of Italy”, “Bosco”, etc. Many places that carry marks of that time can be actually visited.
The surface of the territory is nearly 52.000 ha. Except for some low hills, the greatest part of the territory is a flat field. Nearly 12 km from the west, the zone is limited by the sea, thus having the same distance of sandy beaches. Such beaches have also wide strips of pine-woods, bushes and wet zones, which separate the beaches from the cultivated land. Being that these beaches are near the towns and big inhabited areas, and due to the very good conditions of the linking roads, the beaches are visited a lot by tourists and visitors. Erzen can be seen at the entrance of Municipality and it also serves as the border of this zone, extending up to the place where it pours into the sea, after nearly 15 km.
The region has a great agricultural and tourism potential. The inhabitants and other investors have constructed, rearranged and adapted their homes to host tourists and they have also made small investments for services in the sector of tourism.
